Scheduling the annual celebratory fund raising Tanglewood on Parade for the third Wednesday of August instead of the first Tuesday, as had been the custom, worked out very well for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. An overcast afternoon gave way to a warm, sunny early evening, and the lawn was crowded with picnickers all the way back to the area near the main entrance.

Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart was autographing CDs for fans near the main entrance a couple hours before he would lead the Pops in selections from My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago.

Preceding Lockhart on the Koussevitsky Music Shed podium were Pops Laureate conductor John Williams who led an ensemble of Tanglewood Music Center fellows in the Brass Fanfares (and later, the Pops in music from the film Jane Eyre), followed by Maestro James Levine, then Rafael Frubeck de Burgos, who led the T.M.C. orchestra in the second movement from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and later the combined orchestras for the wildly popular 1812 Overture, complete with field artillery and fireworks.
