Ballet Hispanico performed at MASS MoCA

North Adams - Oct. 6, 2006Ballet Hispanico performed at MASS MoCA over the weekend to full houses. The group was founded by artistic director Tina Ramirez in 1970 to provide dance training and performance opportunities for underprivileged Latino youth. Since then, the group has become "the nation's ambassadors of Hispanic culture," sponsoring and performing works by Latino choreographers based on Latin dance elements as well as classical and other contemporary forms. They performed two sets of works at MASS MoCA.

Mark Morris Dance Group at Jacob's Pillow

Review of Mark Morris Dance Group at Jacob's Pillow

Becket, MA - Aug. 22, 2006 Mark Morris once again brought his complex, clever and mysterious dances to Jacob's Pillow this week. He has become a regular at the Pillow festival, returning year after year, which poses a challenge for his most devoted fans (such as me). This is the first year that he has not repeated himself in the works he presents to us. He's chosen to show a body of work mostly from the 80s that are smaller, shorter dances.Review of Mark Morris Dance Group at Jacob's Pillow continued ....

Armitage Gone! Dance at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival

Becket, MA - Aug. 4, 2006 Karole Armitage pushes boundaries and fascinates and challenges the dance audience over and over again. One viewing, so up close, gives the audience a jolt, a shock, and at times, we feel waves of confusion. One must come back again and again. One wants to come back again.Review of Armitage Gone! Tero Saarinen Company at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival

Becket, MA - July 19, 2006 Tero Saarinen Company from Finland performed their US premier of "Borrowed Light," a powerful 2004 work for eight dancers and seven singers, at Jacob's Pillow. This is probably the high point of the Pillow's 74th season; it's the most important dance performance of the summer. Saarinen's main source of inspiration for "Borrowed Light" is the Shakers, which makes its performance at the Pillow in the Berkshires that much more appropriate.Review of Tero Saarinen Company at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival continued ....

Northwest Pacific Ballet at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival

Becket, MA - Aug. 16, 2006 Northwest Pacific Ballet performed at Jacob's Pillow this week to sold-out audiences. They had an enthusiastic reception which was mystifying considering the mediocrity and unevenness of the work. A great dancer Peter Boal has recently taken over as artistic director after his retirement from New York City Ballet.Review of Northwest Pacific Ballet at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival continued ....

Suzanne Farrell Ballet at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival

Becket, MA - July 6, 2006 Suzanne Farrell Ballet brought an all-Balanchine show to Jacob's Pillow this week. This is a company founded by America's former prima ballerina directing a dozen of her prot´ges in straight-up neo-classical ballet (usually Balanchine). Ballet is not my strong suit.Review of Suzanne Farrell Ballet at Jacob's Pillow continued ....
